Guide to Writing a Resume Without a Template

Guide to Writing a Resume Without a TemplateIf you're an employer, perhaps you have seen hundreds of resumes, and you know that a strong resume is one that has a good contact information and job history attached to it. But, with so many different types of applications out there and so many templates available, how do you know what to choose? As you may already know, hiring managers are always on the lookout for people who can really grab their attention. A fresh resume or cover letter attached to an equally fresh resume might seem to be a big mistake to them, but there is actually an easy way to do it.Because job searching is more of a public interaction than ever before, and because more people are entering the workforce than ever before, hiring managers are more focused on determining whether a candidate can make a good employee. This means that they need to take notice of details that show more about a person's background and how the person fits into the work environment. A resume or cover letter attached to an equally well written and organized resume is the best way to grab the attention of the hiring manager. The truth is that your resume is not the place where you should include everything about you, but there are some things that you can put in a resume that will get noticed by the hiring manager. They may be small things, but it is a start. Here is what you should avoid when trying to make a resume.First, avoid using complex wording or words. Most hiring managers have a very limited vocabulary and will simply ignore something that doesn't look natural or that is hard to understand. Instead, think about using a resume format that is simple to read and is easy to read. Make sure that the font is large enough and the information is not hard to read.Secondly, make sure that the job responsibilities that you list are complete. Many hiring managers want to know what your experience is, but unless you can provide them with examples of your work, it will probabl y not get you much. Instead, use a combination of recent information as well as company news, and try to include a few examples of projects you've done if you have them. Finally, think about what you want to convey to your prospective employer about certain aspects of your personality. You don't have to have a full resume but you can use your summary to convey important information about yourself and your work experience. This will give you a better chance at landing the job if you fill in all the blanks with keywords. Again, the hiring manager does not have the same vocabulary as you do so you need to consider what they are looking for and what they are likely to be searching for when deciding which keywords to use.Once you've gotten your resume to your friend and you've learned a little bit about resume writing, then you are ready to tackle the hiring manager. Take a few minutes to go over your resume and see if there are any areas where you could improve. Use this guide to writing a resume without a template, and you will get noticed in the hiring process.

Worthington (1817 1880) turned into a profoundly respected proficient mechanical architect from hands on preparing and commonsense experience. Actually, following various working years, that profession planning made him progressively mindful of the requirement for people to have formal preparing. He joined other concerned experts during the 1850s to set up the Brooklyn Collegiate Polytechnic Institute and served on its first leading body of trustees. Among his achievements as a specialist were the advancement of improved steam-driven, direct-acting siphons for steam-controlled vessels, and one of the principal down to earth water meters. He was one of the establishing individuals from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. As Henry arrived at adulthood, he had different thoughts. The U.S. was still particularly a horticultural country with most assembling occurring along the Eastern Seaboard, and transportation was a best in class field. At the point when the province of New York gave a call to designers and architects to concoct a steam channel vessel for the Erie Canal, which had been utilizing donkeys and ponies to pull flatboats since its initial 15 years sooner, Worthington was up for the test. New York state authorities considered this to be an approach to advance more traffic and extend assembling to different districts. With his dads favoring and budgetary support, Worthington started at age 23 to examine the issue. Boilers on steam-fueled vessels of that time must be consistently renewed with water, and the siphons to do so were driven legitimately by the motor. Be that as it may, frequently the pontoon was not moving and the motors were inert; for example at whatever point the vessel went through trench bolts, the motor was killed, and the water level in the evaporator dropped. It could be recharged uniquely by a hand siphon. This was a monotonous system as well as shielded the team from performing different obligations on the vessel. Worthington built up an alternate technique, a steam-driven feed siphon that was immediate acting, as such, one that worked autonomously and consequently from the motor. The organization made its first deals of Worthington siphons to the U.S. Naval force in 1850 for the USS Susquehanna, the primary Navy boat to be named for a stream. Notwithstanding shipper and naval force vessels, the siphon was likewise sold for use in lodgings, production lines, mines, and quarries. During that decade, his organization ventured into delivering siphons for regions, including the city of Savannah, GA, and in 1855, Worthington protected and started fabricating a water meter. Proceeding to take a shot at improving siphons, Worthington created structures for different applications, for example, kettle feed, oil pipeline, and hydro-electric employments. In 1857, he concocted a duplex direct-acting siphon, considered the most huge advancement in steam-controlled siphons at that point and one that turned into a broadly utilized methods for dealing with civil water by steam power. In the following two decades, somewhere in the range of 80 regions in the U.S. were utilizing it in their waterworks tasks. Sample Business Cards for Job Seekers Your Business Card

Test Business Cards for Job Seekers Your Business Card Test Business Cards for Job Seekers Your Business Card The most significant prop in your pursuit of employment is one of the most overlooked. When hundreds - or, as a rule, thousands - of occupation searchers accumulate in one spot, the strain to stand apart can be overpowering. You can arm yourself with resumes and tests from your portfolio, however the props you'll require must be shorter and more straightforward than anything you would use in a conventional activity looking environment. To have an effect at a major systems administration occasion, you'll need an infectious business card. Be that as it may, what do you put on it: your LinkedIn address? Your resume in 2-point textual style? A stripped-down rendition of your official synopsis ?According to message master Laura Allen, author of thepitchgirl.com, with regards to business cards, toning it down would be best and interest is everything.I would not put an official rundown on it, she said. It will be too long.Your business card is a fundamental promoting instrument for these sort s of employment fairs in light of the fact that the selection representatives and recruiting directors there won't have the opportunity or vitality to filter through enormous heaps of resumes. The greater the gathering, the more fortunate you are on the off chance that they recall you at all.A meeting is more diligently… you have no time. There, you're compensated for being brief, Allen said. My essential dependable guideline is, 'clear and compact equivalents money; dubious and verbose equivalents junk.' The most ideal approach to have an effect under these extreme conditions, Allen stated, is to make a convincing catchphrase for your card, one that will make a potential boss need to find out about you.You need to give them motivation to return to your LinkedIn page, she said. In the event that I meet 40 individuals at a gathering, I don't have the opportunity to return and take a gander at their resumes, however on the off chance that someone gives me their business card and its front says, 'finalized a $5.5 million negotiation from a cold pitch,' … that is something worth finishing on.However, that probably won't be the best outcome, if your LinkedIn site isn't up to snuff. If you have a solid LinkedIn page, at that point I would put it on there, Allen said. On the off chance that you have one association, at that point I would leave it off. When coordinating somebody from your card, it's critical that you send them some place that depicts you in a decent light. One famous technique is to make your own Web page, which incorporates all your resume data, and allude recruiting directors there from your business card.Business Card PitchWhile the '$5.5 million' pitch appears to be an extraordinary model, it's pulled from the real world - Allen at one time utilized the expression on her own business card. Not all occupation searchers will have an achievement of that size, yet you can in any case arouse the curiosity of an employing director with a basic and con vincing message. It's everything about separating down to the most significant point, Allen said. You take the 15-second pitch - four sentences - and make that even smaller. It doesn't need to cost that much. Some business card makers, for example, Vista Print, will make customized cards economically - particularly when you consider that such a speculation may prompt your next job.Allen said a serious mix-up individuals will in general make is utilizing more seasoned cards and refreshing the data physically with a pen with an end goal to spare money. It's cheap, she said. Individuals don't need mixed drink napkins. In the present evolving commercial center, another issue could be that activity searchers are investigating an assortment of fields. When that is the situation, Allen recommends utilizing various messages on various business cards. Make a pitch for each specialty, she said.Don't be reluctant to be bold, she included. A forceful style, especially one that is communicated quickl y on your business card, may be what gets you saw among a show corridor brimming with enthusiastic employment seekers.Tell a convincing story, Allen said. Present a defense for yourself.

How to lose your job before you even start University of Manchester Careers Blog

How to lose your job before you even start University of Manchester Careers Blog A big name employer at our recent fair told me a cautionary tale which I found both shocking and horribly inevitable. Two students applied to the employer through their graduate programme. They both got through the online application form stage successfully. They both passed the numerical and verbal reasoning tests. They both got through very demanding assessment centres and through the interviews. They both got offers on this prestigious graduate programme, the gateway to excellent training and support, and often the fast-track to management the kind of job many graduates dream of, but relatively few achieve. Before they were even due to start their new jobs, the employer invited all its new graduate employees in for a day an informal, get to know you, start the process of making the transition to work day, the real deluxe treatment. At that point, in preparation for meeting all their new recruits for first time in one place, the recruiting managers pulled out the new recruits applications, to get some background on them. Two applications were identical. Not just similar, but word for word identical in their answers to those tricky online application form questions. With so many applications coming in at different times during the year, the applications had never been seen side-to-side before, but it was now horribly obvious that collusion or copying had been going on. You can imagine the uncomfortable conversations which had to take place at what was intended to be a celebratory day at the start of a shiny new career. Neither recruit would admit that they had copied each other and there was a further complication, when one of the new recruits tried to implicate a graduate recruited in the previous year, whose application had definite similarities to the two new identical applications. Who knows whether one copied the other or both copied someone else? Maybe its even more shadowy had they both found someone who would help with their applications (for a fee) and supplied the exact same help to multiple candidates? Neither recruit would admit guilt, so the employer had no choice but to sack both the new recruits before they even officially started. They couldnt take a chance on recruiting someone whose ethical standards fell way below their expectations. Did the employer have proof that they were both at fault? No, but thats not the test needed in cases of dismissal. If I remember correctly*, an employer only needs a reasonable belief that misconduct has occurred. That reasonable belief has to be arrived at through a reasonable investigation process, giving you the chance to have your say, but in the end, You cant prove it! is no defence. The irony is, of course, that both candidates were good enough to get through the much more difficult stages of assessment centres and interviews, but they blew it by somebody cheating at the very first stage. So, if you know anyone whos ever tempted to look for model answers, either from a friend, on the web, or from someone offering to write their applications for them, get them to imagine how theyll feel when, after going through the pain of the assessment processes, their new employer sacks them because they cant be trusted. *I may be a bit hazy on my employment law now as its almost 20 years since I had to go through an employment tribunal as an HR manager but we did win, of course! 4 Top Secrets of Entry-Level Resume Writing Before writing your resume you’ll no doubt go online to research a few writing  tips, and end up reading article after article giving advice on what and what not to  put: “do not exceed two pages in length, begin with most recent work history,  highlight your key career achievements in a separate section…” This is all great advice, however as an Entry-Level applicant,  chances are you have limited experience and the first obstacle you face is finding  enough useful information to fill one page. As an experienced CPRW (certified professional resume writer) over the years  I’ve met with thousands of stressed young job seekers, most of which were battling  through the process of writing their first resume in pursuit of a decent job, following  their college graduation. In nearly all these cases, the same four rules helped them  overcome common issues faced by nearly all entry-level job-seekers, quickly putting  them on the fast track to career success. Here’s my top four tips on how to write an  inspiring entry-level resume. 1. Expound your Education: Entry-level resumes often look bare. Most college graduates worry about this  and go to great lengths to fill their resume using complicated formatting tricks and  oversized text fonts. These are not the solution however, and only serve to highlight  your problem. What is important is that you demonstrate your knowledge and ability in the  industry you’re applying for. To help beef up your resume you want to focus on your  education, expounding the specific classes you took that illustrate your knowledge  and expertise relevant to the job and industry you’re applying to, that indicates  you’re a good choice for interview. Always research the company you’re applying to and the specific demands of the  job at hand. Reflect on what classes you sat that taught you relevant knowledge, and  then highlight these under your education section. Job: Junior analyst at Barney Rubble Business Consultancy firm (a major US/Asian conglomerate) Degree: Major in Business administration, minor in Chinese language. Relevant classes to highlight: Business  language in Chinese, oral proficiency, etc. A dull education section briefly summarizing the school you attended and your  major, suddenly transforms into an engaging exposition of your key areas of  expertise, actively marketing your unique knowledge. The additional content will  also help make your resume look more complete. 2. Give Yourself A Professional Title: Branding is a major aspect of job searching. You’re trying to create your own  brand idea â€" one that portrays you as a professional with valuable  expertise and knowledge. Even if you’ve only just graduated, you can still identify  yourself as an expert, and you are! Take into account the field of work you want to  apply for, your major, and build your resume around that.  Top resumes always include a title at the start of the document, usually  incorporated alongside the person’s name. For example: Susan Williams | Administrative Assistant Or Charles Escobar Senior Accounts Executive Sales Manager If you graduated with a major in accountancy and finance then give yourself the  title Accountant and Financial Specialist. If you’re looking for work in,  for example operations management, then title yourself an Operations  Manager. In this case, it would be a good idea to revise your college books  including anything you studied about operations management, but this will certainly  separate yourself from other entry-level applicants and help build confidence that  you’re the right choice. 3. Swap your Career Objective for a Professional  Summary: This is a double-edged sword. First, by removing your career objective and  replacing it with a professional summary section, you’ll help build your personal  brand. A summary section helps portray you as a professional, a specialist, and an  expert. By writing a lengthier summary section you are saying: “I am a  qualified expert in industry X and I have skill and knowledge to offer you”. Additionally, nowadays most resume experts consider a career objective to be a  waste of space on your resume. In theory, the purpose of a career objective is to  show that your interests align with those of the company you’re applying to and that  your goal is to work for them thus benefitting their organization. But this is already  demonstrated, by the mere fact that you’re applying in the first place. This  ultimately renders you’re your career objective redundant â€" redundancy is a big  no-no on a resume! By following my advice, you won’t only be removing  a redundant section from your resume, but you’ll be replacing it with something far  more effective. How to write a Professional Profile A professional profile is a short introductory paragraph that highlights your key  strengths, skills, and areas of expertise. It should be no more than 3â€"4 sentences  long. You want to create an impactful paragraph that markets your unique skill set  it is your 30-second elevator pitch. The purpose of this paragraph is that (as is often the case) if the hiring manager  only reads your resume for a few seconds, they will instantly be impressed.  Incorporate three key selling points: your degree and major, any relevant  experience you have, any key skills you have developed. Make sure you outline your  ambition to perform within the given industry. Include any achievements, use  industry buzz words central to you’re the job being advertised, and use inspiring,  active language. Keep it concise, cut unnecessary language usage; consider it your  â€œheadline”. 4. Only Include Credible Professional Experience: I’ve worked with students, college grads and young professionals that have been  told to incorporate any and all professional experience they have on their resume,  even the baby-sitting jobs they did during high school. They were told to extract the  key skills from these jobs and apply these in their new resume this is wrong. When considering what’s best to put on your resume, think logically. What will  most impress a recruiting manager? Someone telling them that their baby-sitter job  each Saturday night taught them cash handling skills? That their understanding of  logistics is based on delivering papers aged 13? This is more likely to reflect badly  on you, in my honest opinion. Most college students have held a part-time job, worked an internship, or have  been involved in volunteer work. When writing your professional experience section, focus on this type of experience, and develop a structured exposition of the  necessary skills you developed. A professional experience section featuring one well  presented work experience will be far more effective than a lengthy section  detailing lots of minor, far-fetched stories loosely linking teenage gardening chores  to entry level accounting! What if I have no proper experience? If you don’t have any professional experience, then its time to go and get some.  Go to your library, local community center, or contact a career advisor at your  school and ask about volunteer work programs. Consider what industry you are  targeting career-wise, and then look for volunteer programs that will provide  relevant experience. You’ll be able to start in no time, and you’ll only need to do a  few hours a week to gain something that will substantially impact your resume.  What’s more, you’ll be learning real life skills that will become highly valuable once  you get your foot in the door somewhere to begin your career! Finding a job fresh out of college isn’t always easy, it takes perseverance,  confidence and even a bit of luck. There are many factors that will affect your  chances with each application you make â€" the once factor you have control over is  your resume. Make sure you’re doing everything you can to turn the odds in your  favor. Good luck! Playing The Game (of Life) Without Limits - The Villanova Story

Playing The Game (of Life) Without Limits - The Villanova Story The biggest word we use in this program is attitude. -Daniel Ochefu, #23 for Villanova the 2016 National Champions in mens college basketball.Whether youre a fan of college basketball of not, youll find the story of the Villanova Wildcats inspiring.   After 31 years, a selfless group of humble yet talented young men brought the NCAA mens basketball championship back to Villanova University. What inspires me about this team is not only that they won but how and why they won and the overall level of joyfulness and fun they brought to the experience (for their fans especially). They won by being selfless.   The game winning, buzzer beating shot that won the national championship game for Villanova was the result of a selfless pass.   Ryan Arcidiacano passed the ball to Kris Jenkins who buried the game winning three-point shot.   Heres the thing Ryan is a very talented three-point shooter himself and a senior playing his last game for Villanova.   Ryan bleeds blue and white.   Both his pa rents attended Villanova and he grew up in the universitys backyard.   Ryan could have easily made this about himself and taken the shot but he didnt.   He was well defended by the North Carolina Tarheels in those final moments.   And Ryan being the team player that he is, made the pass to Jenkins.   Other 18-20 somethings might have chosen the glory but as Ive heard Ryan quoted as saying, I dont care how many points I get, I just want this team to win.   Sharing the ball cinched a Villanova victory and not just in the championship game.   Having watched this team play in the Big East and the NCAA tournaments, I can tell you everyone made selfless choices to help this team win at various points. This was business and it was personal.   This is a business trip thats how the team viewed the Final Four.   They had business to finish.   For as well as the Wildcats played throughout the NCAA tournament beating top 5 team after top 5 team, many still picked North Carolina to win the champ ionship.   So the Villanova team had it on their shoulders to prove the analysts wrong.   But it was also personal.   Kris Jenkins aka Big Smooth had an adoptive brother on the Tarheels who had been telling reporters he would never let Kris live it down if he lost the game.   When the seconds were ticking down on the clock and Villanova had to make a basket to win, I saw it was Kris Jenkins taking the shot at the buzzer.   I knew he would do all he could to make that shot and prove his brother wrong.   As motivating as it is to want to win a championship, its even more motivating to show those who underestimate us just what were capable of.Joyfulness and fun Smiles, encouragement, hugs thats how I saw this team responding to ups and downs throughout the tournament.   Never did I see them angry with one another even when mistakes were made.   Even Coach Wright kept his cool and never appeared frustrated with his team.   The #NovaNation of fans (at least the ones I follow) were very supportive of the team in their Facebook posts, Tweets, and LinkedIn messages.   The message of love and support came from the top at Villanova University too. One of my favorite images after the Final Four win to put the Wildcats in the championship was of University President Father Peter Donahue giving Ryan Arcidiacano a hug.   It was like his own son had won the game.   Having met Father Peter I have no doubt he was a very positive force behind this team in addition to Coach Wright and the staff. When asked about what made this team special, Kris Jenkins said, We accept coaching.   Considering that the Wildcats Coach Jay Wright won the Naismith Coach of the Year award several times including this year, I can appreciate that.   The success Ive seen in my own coaching clients, is incredible.   Im sure Jay Wright feels that way about this team.We can all play without limits and achieve incredible results whatever field we are in.     Make attitude your focus.   Work selflessly to h elp others/the organization be a success.   Enjoy the experience, make it fun and youll create your own inspiring success story.(Championship photos courtesy of my favorite fellow Villanova alum Craig Zabransky who attended the game.)

6 Ways to Bust a Mid-Career Plateau - Wolfgang Career Executive Coaching

6 Ways to Bust a Mid-Career Plateau - Wolfgang Career Executive Coaching Guest blog with some fantastic tips for mid-career professionals getting off a career plateau. â€" Coach Wolfgang Hitting a career plateau in your current job is normal. For most workers this situation can translate to boredom and the feeling of being stuck in a rut, or the fear that you have gone as far as you can go. Unfortunately, career fulfillment impacts overall happiness. Plateauing can negatively impact your productivity and job performance. The good news is that the feeling of hitting a career plateau is not necessarily a bad thing, and can be the start of positive change. Boredom is a Sign of Growth Inc.com writes that being bored with your current work duties is but a symptom of growth. While you may feel stuck, anxious, and lazy all at the same time, remember that these feelings are temporary. Now that you can basically do your job with one hand tied behind your back, you may be more open to learning new skills and acquiring new experiences. If you are bored, use it as springboard to change your career path, rather than an excuse to perform poorly. Work on Small Pilot Projects The boredom that comes with a career plateau opens up opportunities to pursue worthwhile skills, passion projects, or experiments that can give your career some direction. Testing small pilot projects is a good way to find out which of your skills or dream projects are actually worth pursuing in the long run. This includes anything that you can get feedback on, but won’t drastically change your everyday life. For instance, if you’re an in-house digital artist who wants to be an exhibiting artist full-time, you can start by finishing single artworks to join group exhibits. Accept commissions for artworks that will allow you more creative freedom and skill development. Spread your efforts wide to see which of these worthwhile pursuits are truly worth your time and effort. Research Internal Advancement Options If you have nowhere to go but up, then it’s time to talk to your manager or supervisor. Based on your own research, how are you qualified to take on more and/or higher responsibilities at the office? Make sure your immediate superior knows that you’re ready for growth and advancement. Also, find out what positions other departments are trying to fill. Going to your own office first instead of exploring outside options also shows loyalty to your company, which may be rewarded with appropriate advancement options. Tap Your Professional Network You wouldn’t have gotten to the peak of your job without at least establishing a small but trustworthy professional network. As you involve yourself in various small pilot projects, take this opportunity to tap into, as well as expand, your network. These are the people who can provide you with the tools, resources, and contacts relevant to your current projects and overall long-term plans. Don’t forget to give back and ask what you can do for the people in your network as well. Remember that mutual assistance is the backbone of professional networking. Find a Mentor who Pushed through a Career Plateau A mentor who you trust and respect can set you in the right direction. They can be your boss, a friend, your immediate superior, a former colleague with decades of experience, or anyone who knows what to do with your particular skill set or expertise. The right mentor can show you the many reasonable paths you can take towards achieving your long-term goals. Even better, ask your mentor about times when he or she hit a career plateau! Consider Going Back to School There’s no such thing as being too old for school. Maryville University reveals that more adults are choosing to pursue higher education by attending classes outside of regular business hours, pursuing online study, or a combination of both. Many academic and technical institutions now offer courses geared towards professionals looking to acquire more marketable skills. Some courses can even be finished entirely online, giving you the flexibility to finish the course without giving up your full-time job. If you prefer pursuing your degree in actual, physical classrooms, set aside some days off to visit colleges that have courses that appeal to you. Getting your master’s degree or specialist certificate can open up new pathways that can take your career to greater heights. These are just 6 ideas to get you unstuck in your career. In fact, view this as an opportunity to grow. Remember, a career plateau doesn’t mean you have to stay stuck! Leave a comment below or talk to one of our coaches today for more in-depth insights into how you can work through your career plateau. Vacation Days Why Most Americans Arent Taking All of Them

Vacation Days Why Most Americans Aren't Taking All of Them Most Americans would rather forgo an extra few days of vacation to return to the office. In fact, the majority of Americans do not use all of their allotted vacation days, according to several recent studies. In 2016, 54% of U.S. employees didn’t use all of their days off â€" working a total of 662 million more days than they were required to, according to a report from the U.S. Travel Association’s Project: Time Off. And working those extra days doesn’t mean they’ll earn extra cash. Of the days off, 206 million were forfeited, totaling $66.4 billion. Those unused vacation days resulted in a $236-billion loss in spending in the U.S. economy, according to the report. A different Glassdoor report found that 54% of American employees who receive vacation days only end up using half of them. So why would Americans forgo their time off? They worry they will fall behind â€" or worse, get fired. “Fear,” Scott Dobroski, career trends analyst at Glassdoor told MarketWatch. “That’s the underscoring theme.” Additionally, Glassdoor found that even when Americans do take all their vacation days, two-thirds of them work while away. But that’s not a good way to spend a vacation, according to Glassdoor analysts, who found that working while on a trip does more harm than good. “While taking a vacation may make employees temporarily feel behind, they should realize that stepping away from work and fully disconnecting carries a ripple effect of benefits,” Carmel Galvin, chief human resources officer at Glassdoor, told MarketWatch. “It allows employees to return to work feeling more productive, creative, recharged and reenergized.”
